Arthropod Community Responses Reveal Potential Predators and Prey of Entomopathogenic Nematodes in a Citrus Orchard

چکیده

The contributions of soil arthropods to entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) food webs are mainly studied in artificial conditions. We investigated changes arthropod communities a citrus orchard following inundation with Steinernema feltiae or Heterorhabditis bacteriophora. hypothesized that taxa, which decline increase response EPN augmentation, represent potential prey predators EPN, respectively. Soil was sampled periodically after nematodes were applied, DNA extracted from organisms recovered by sucrose centrifugation, libraries prepared, and the ITS2 CO1 genes sequenced using Illumina protocol. Species 107 microarthropod (mites collembola) families 121 insect identified. Amplicon sequence variant (ASV) reads for H. bacteriophora less than 10% those S. three days inundation, whereas ASVs double plots compared feltiae. Significantly fewer untreated suggest possibility preyed on mites Collembola addition insects. responses over time individual species (MOTU) regulation (up down) these resulted cumulative many species, rather few key species.

Identifying Key Predators of the Glassy-winged Sharpshooter in a Citrus Orchard

Over 1,500 predators were screened for glassy-winged sharpshooter (GWSS) remains using a GWSS egg-specific monoclonal antibody (MAb) and several GWSS-specific genetic markers. Specimens were collected in 2002 and 2003 from a citrus orchard (Riverside, CA) harboring high densities of GWSS. We found that 6.2% of all specimens examined tested positive for GWSS remains. The most frequent predators ...

Entomopathogenic nematodes

What are you focusing on at the moment? I am still carrying on with my research into the molecular mechanisms of memory, currently focusing on the link between CaMKII and AMPA receptors during memory consolidation. But two years ago, funded by the BBSRC, we embarked on an exciting new project, investigating the link between decision-making and learning in Lymnaea. This project uses much less mo...

Adjuvants to improve aerial control of the citrus mealybug Planococcus citri (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) using entomopathogenic nematodes.

The citrus mealybug, Planococcus citri, is a highly destructive pest of citrus, occurring only in the aerial parts of plants. Humidity will be one of the key factors to consider when using entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) as biological control agents. Different adjuvants can be added to suspensions of EPNs, to improve control as a foliar application. An aqueous suspension containing Heterorhabd...
